Friends and Members:
I have a special reason to visit Arlington National Cemetery and every time that I do, I take the time to walk along the rows of identical white headstones. Those walks came to mind this week as I have been planning for Memorial Sunday Service. Walking those rows gives one a great sense of humbleness and appreciation for each of those person’s gift of my freedom. There is no special ness or favoritism by race or creed or rank or service. Privates rest next to Colonels and Generals. Admirals are resting in the company of Seaman. All branches of the service are also mixed together. The different veterans from different wars also lie side by side. Presidents and Senators and Supreme Court Justices lie beneath those simple stones. There is a common thread that ties them all together. That thread is their sacrifice for our freedom and the freedom of other nations. Many saw the worst that humankind does to one another and some suffered badly for it. Yes, they represent the past and we should also be thankful for both the good and the not so good of our nation’s past. Throughout this country there are many such veteran’s cemeteries and also many in countries where they fought their wars. In many of those countries there are still the remains of those who will never be found and never come home. We need to pause this weekend and thank the troops of George Washington and the North and South and World War I and World War II and the Korean War and Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan. If you stand in the middle of the largest field of white markers at Arlington and squint your eyes and slowly turn a complete 360 degrees you can almost feel the power of freedom surrounding you and bringing you peace. We are all blessed by God but also by everyone who has ever sacrificed for our freedom. God Bless them everyone!
