One of the scriptures from the lectionary for this Sunday is found in I Corinthians 12:12-31a. This scripture is one of the more famous and familiar scriptures of Paul. It is the writing about the parts of the body and how they all need each other to be a a whole functioning body and also that our bodies are a temple. Each part can not function independently. It is interesting how, as we grow older, these words become more and more true. When any of these parts begin to weaken and sometimes fail it truly does have an affect on the whole. When are eyes weaken or become a bit blurry it does have an affect on all of us. When our hearing begins to lose the ability to pick up all sound levels I affects all of us. When are hands are not as strong it interferes with aspects of our life, There of course are all the problems when major organs begin to fail. The older we get the less the whole body functions as one. I am in the midst of two cataract surgeries and when all is done the blurring will hopefully be gone. Last summer I had my hearing tested and there was need for hearing aids and they were able to reprogram SuAnn’s hearing aids so I could get back to a younger level of hearing. Modern medicine can do a lot to heal us and renew us. They can protect us also. So we have protective vaccines for a lot of diseases that used to destroy our lives. We can be made whole but not entirely as God created us. We can protect our selves from the evils of disease but only God can truly protect our souls. The whole world is one great body of God’s creation but the indiviual parts and differences need to work together. Paul says “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it.” Amen!
