I have always envied and admired the work of the wood working crafts people. When I was young I had two uncles who had wonderful workshops in their basements. They had the saws and the drills and the lathes and one of was also a whittler. He did some amazing figures with those sharp small knifes. On occasion they would let me try my hand on the lathe and turn a block of wood into something more beautiful. In my later professional years I have had the opportunity to visit many people in their homes and without a doubt almost every home had at least some piece of wood work and sometimes many that had been crafted by someone in their family. Tables, cabinets, footstools, magazine racks, napkin holders, clocks and so many more wood pieces decorate the homes. When ever I see those works I think about how the person crafting them had a plan either on paper or in their memory to follow. Each step had to take place in a particular order and each piece had to be perfect in order to make the finished products as beautiful as they are. The cutting, gluing, nailing and finishing all followed an order established by the craftsperson or someone who had developed the plan before them. I can imagine how the person who made the piece felt when it was entirely finished and they brought it up from the basement or in from the shop and showed it to the family or placed it in the appropriate spot in the house. In so many homes that person is no longer there but their creativity and what they put into that work lives on and gives those loved ones a true feeling of presence. Speaking of being creative Genesis 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” No blueprint or former plan to go by! We can see around us in this natural world much evidence of that great creation. God continued that creative process when God gave us God’s only begotten Son. The crafts person’s love and creativity is seen in their finished piece of work as we see all around us the ongoing creativity and love of God.
