Friends and Members:
I shared this note a few years ago but would like to share it once more. It is amazing how over the years of this ministry, I have had unbelievable encounters with “caregivers.” These have been doctors, nurses, hospice workers, clergy and family and friends just to name a few. As many of you know over the past few years I became and still am a 24/7 family caregiver in addition to my limited ministerial responsibilities. I understand more then ever before, the various rolls and unique place that caregivers have in the life of seriously ill or physically and needy persons. So this note is my way of interweaving the roll of care giving with the 23rd Psalm:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Caregivers are guides helping persons to travel the maze of spiritual, emotional and physical struggles.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
Caregivers give comfort and compassionate support that allows the persons to feel protected and secure.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Caregivers lift the weight of pain and suffering and continue providing a sense of God’s promise of presence and love.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Caregivers walk side by side with persons whose life may be ending or could end soon helping them to know that they are not alone. No one should ever die alone! With spiritual support the fear of tomorrow is less and they are comforted.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Caregivers provide not only nourishment of the soul but for many nourishment of food and medicines.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Caregivers help persons to feel the goodness of God and God’s merciful love until they then dwell peacefully in the arms of God.
We all are thankful for the shepherds of our world whose love is truly a gift of God!
